Shock arrowed through Conner at the sight. Eve struggled with the frightened cow and fought with the fence twined around the animal’s legs.

“You’re doing great, Eve.” Visions of her feet and hands being slashed to ribbons seared in his mind.

He skidded to a halt and jumped off. In seconds, he’d tied up his mount and got the wire cutters from the pack horse. “I’ll cut the bottom one first, so your leg will drop to the ground.” “She’s hurt, Conn.” Eve’s words came out choked.

“Not bad. I can tend to her. Here goes.” He snapped the wire, releasing one of Eve’s booted foot. “Going for the next one up. Be prepared. She might buck against you.”

“Been there. Done that. Got a sore spot.”

Conner groaned. “Ah, Evie.” With his breath trapped in his lungs, he made quick work of the wire and the one above it. The cow kicked out. He jumped back, avoiding the hoof to his thigh. But she landed back on Eve, nearly squashing her.

Throwing down the cutters, he hustled around and grabbed Eve under the arms and yanked her. It took two tries and she was free.

“You, all right?” He went to help, but she was already crawling back to the hurt cow.

“She’s bleeding, Conn.” Eve untangled the dangerous wire from the cow’s legs, shredding her gloves.

Relief shot through him. Eve was unharmed. His smile lingered as he got the kit from Packs and went to tend to the cuts.

Seeing her trapped under the cow like that had his heart lurching to his throat. When he realized she’d done it on purpose to save the animal, his admiration grew.

A greenhorn? The prettiest and most tenderhearted one he’d ever seen.

Whoever Eve really was didn’t matter at the moment; she’d proven herself to be a real cowgirl today.

He looked up at her as he cleaned the last cut on the cow’s leg. The worry cleared from Eve’s eyes and she held his stare.

Silence beat.

A cute little frown formed between her brows. The corner of her lip tugged up. “Conn?”

“Evie, I’m damn proud of you.”

Now she smiled wild and long.

Something hitched behind his ribcage.

Nope. Not going there.
